Dr. Rafael Hernandez Jr. is a board certified ophthalmologist and a fully trained internist and the son of Dr. Rafael Hernandez, founder of Eye Consultants & Surgeons of Miami. He attended the University of Miami for his undergraduate degree in Pre Med/ Biology before continuing his education at the Autonomous School of Medicine of Central America in San Jose, Costa Rica where he earned a doctoral degree in medicine and graduated Cum Laude Honors.
Upon continuing his education, Dr. Hernandez Jr. completed a residency in Internal Medicine in New York at St. Luke’s/Roosevelt Hospital College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University. Additionally, he completed his residency in Ophthalmology at the Eye Foundation of Kansas City Truman Medical Center, University of Missouri. Through the duration of his career, Dr. Hernandez Jr. served on the Executive Committee for House staff at Truman Medical Center, St. Luke’s Medical Center, and Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. In addition, he has given major presentations at the University of Missouri Kansas City concerning diagnoses, treatments and procedures. To present day he remains affiliated with many distinguished associations and organizations including but not limited to the American Medical Association, American College of Physicians, American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Missouri Ophthalmological Society, and the Miami Ophthalmological Association. Since the completion of his training, the father son duo has worked together in private practice since 1996 with privileges at Mercy Hospital and Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.
